Facebook announced last week that it was updating its policy on removing false claims about COVID-19 and the vaccines from its site and Instagram. According to CNET, Facebook and Instagram collectively have taken down more than 12 million pieces of content that contained false information about COVID-19 that could have led to physical harm.

Users will now not be allowed to post statements about vaccines being ineffective at preventing COVID-19 or about vaccines being toxic or more dangerous than the disease itself, or that they cause autism. Any ads containing these claims will also be removed. These rules are designed specifically to help prevent posts that could lead to “reduced vaccinations and harm public health and safety.”

“We will begin enforcing this policy immediately, with a particular focus on pages, groups and accounts that violate these rules, and we'll continue to expand our enforcement over the coming weeks,” said Facebook Vice President of Integrity Guy Rosen in a blog post.
