Is it possible to hold a GIF in your hand?

Answer: Yes, thanks to a reinvented Polaroid-style camera that instantly prints GIFs.

Thanks to Abhishek Singh’s reinvention of the Polaroid camera, you can now actually print out a GIF and hold it in your hand.

This DIY camera — called the Instagif Next Step— was modeled after the Polaroid OneStep Camera. It works by recording a three-second GIF, then printing it out on a cartridge designed to resemble a traditional Polaroid print. Created from a modified Raspberry Pi LCD screen, the cartridge even fades in just like instant film. There is also a Raspberry Pi computer module inside the camera, which captures, compresses and sends the GIF to the cartridge through a kind of Wi-Fi network. The bodies of both the cartridge and camera were created using a 3-D printer.

Singh documented the entire process and shared it on Imgur, as well as posting the code on GitHub, so that anyone can make their own GIF-printing camera.
