Colorado Governor Owens Signs Four Anti-Crime Bills

Stronger state laws regarding sexually violent predators, ID theft, and mortgage fraud

Gov. Bill Owens this week signed a series of anti-crime bills to strengthen Colorado's laws in several critical areas, including sexually violent predators, identification theft, and fraud related to mortgages and foreclosures.

"Colorado will be a safer place for our families and a less inviting place for predatory criminals," Owens said. "The first priority of government is the safety of our citizens. That can mean strengthening existing laws as well as passing new laws in response to new threats. Today, Colorado has done both."

With the Governor was state Attorney General John Suthers who said, "These bills demonstrate our steadfast commitment to public safety. Thanks to the work of a number of individuals, including the Attorney General's Mortgage and Foreclosure Fraud Task Force and the Sexually Violent Predators Task Force, we are building safer communities and working to deter criminals from taking advantage of Colorado citizens."

At a ceremony at the State Capitol, Owens signed the following bills: Senate Bill 22 -- sexually violent predators, House Bill 1347 and House Bill 1326 -- identification theft, House Bill 1323 -- mortgage fraud and Senate Bill 71 -- foreclosure fraud, andf House Bill 1145 -- methamphetamine omnibus bill.
