NYC to Track Inmates

Department of Correction to get data on inmate and probation populations

by / June 18, 2003
NEW YORK -- The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) will implement a business intelligence (BI) solution from Cognos. Using the software to report and analyze information in the data warehouse, DOC along with the New York City Department of Probation (DOP), plans to better understand and track the inmate and probationer populations.

With annual inmate populations totaling 115,000 for the DOC and 70,000 probationers for the DOP, both departments intend to aggregate, analyze and report on critical data in order to have better visibility into their respective populations, as well as understand the overlapping population.

"Going forward, business intelligence capabilities will be strategically important to DOC and DOP in understanding the offender populations under New York City supervision, and will increase our ability to share information with other criminal justice agencies," said Kael S. Goodman, deputy commissioner and CIO of both the New York City, Department of Correction and the Department of Probation.
