(TNS) — The Town of Pepperell is investigating a cyber attack that has impacted the computer systems of its employees and its public safety departments.

Town leaders learned of the incident early Tuesday and contacted the town’s insurance providers, cybersecurity specialists and law enforcement to identify the cause of the cyber attack and contain any possible damage, officials said Wednesday.

The town’s 911 phone system continues to work normally, and there is no evidence that private user information has been shared, officials said.

Cybersecurity professionals are working with the town to find out exactly what data may have been compromised and how the town can make sure it is not released.

“We immediately engaged our insurance provider and reputable outside cybersecurity agencies to respond to and mitigate this attack,” said Town Administrator Andrew MacLean. “We will prioritize keeping the public informed as we move through this process under the guidance of industry professionals.”

Pepperell Town Hall is open for normal business hours and staff are available to help residents with day-to-day needs, officials said.

Non-emergency/business telephone lines at the Pepperell Fire Department and Patriot Regional Emergency Communications Center are out of service due to the attack.

Pepperell Police and Fire continue to respond to emergency calls without any interruption. Other area police and fire departments can still reach Patriot Regional Emergency Communications Center through normal mutual aid channels.

Residents needing to conduct business with those agencies should call 978-433-2671. In case of an emergency, officials said to always dial 911.

The Town and affected departments are expected to provide updates.
