Officials Assemble Task Force to Review HAVA Driver License Matching Requirement

Four states engaged with federal groups

The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) said that a task force has been formed to review provisions of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA--P.L.107-252). Specifically, HAVA requires that individuals registering to vote provide a driver license number or the last four Social Security digits, and that a state election official and motor vehicle authority "must match the information in the registration database with that in the driver's license database." In addition, HAVA requires the state motor vehicle agency to enter into an agreement with the Social Security Administration to verify voter registration information.

The task force is comprised of the states of Michigan, New York, Virginia and Montana, as well as staff from The National Association of Secretaries of State, National Association of State Election Directors, AAMVA, the Social Security Administration and the National Association for Public Health Statistics and Information Systems.
