The California Department of Social Services announced last week that an investigation is under way into an incident where personal information about In-Home Supportive Services recipients and providers was accessed by an unauthorized person or persons.
Access was obtained through a computer at the University of California Berkeley being used by a researcher. "Although the investigation has determined that an unauthorized party accessed the computer itself," said the release, "the investigation has not determined whether any personal data was acquired."
The release provided links for recipients and providers to use as to recommendations to protect themselves against identity theft, and to report any attempts to use personal information.
