(TNS) — Officials in Scioto County are investigating a potential data breach after county employees fell victim to a phishing attack and clicked on suspicious links on county computers.

According to the Scioto County Commissioners, several employees received fraudulent emails designed to appear legitimate. After interacting with the messages, unauthorized individuals may have gained access to sensitive information, prompting an immediate investigation.

On Thursday, the commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to hire an outside law firm to investigate what happened and determine whether any sensitive information may have been compromised. The commissioners agreed to retain the law firm Kutak Rock to assist in the investigation.

The commissioners did not confirm the extent of the breach or what specific data may have been exposed. However, they say cybersecurity protocols were activated quickly to contain the situation and assess potential risks.

Phishing attacks use deceptive emails or messages to trick individuals into revealing credentials or clicking malicious links. It remains one of the most common cybersecurity threats facing government agencies and organizations nationwide.

Local leaders emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that additional safeguards are being reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future. This may include enhanced employee training, stronger email filtering systems and updated security procedures.

At this time, there has been no public confirmation regarding whether residents’ personal information was affected. The Scioto County Commissioners say updates will be provided as more details become available.

The incident highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity at the local government level, as counties and municipalities continue to rely heavily on digital systems to manage operations and public services.
