Virus Takes Control of Webcams

Surveillance cameras connected to insecure networks could be targeted

Sophos, an information security software company, has discovered a new worm known as W32Rbot-GR spreads via shared files and resources, exploits a number of Microsoft security vulnerabilities and installs a backdoor that allows hackers on the other end to take control of Webcams connected to the host computer and send intruders video footage and sound recordings of the camera's surroundings. The virus also allows the intruder to retrieve passwords and other sensitive information from the hard drive of the infected computer.

The W32Rbot-GR virus is also known as Backdoor.IRCBot.gen and WORM_IRCBOT.C.
