Marietta, Ga., emerged as a first-place winner in the 2024 Digital Cities Survey*, something Director of Information Technology Ronald Barrett attributes to a forward-thinking approach to technology.

Much of that hinges on Marietta’s partnerships and proactive efforts to bolster cybersecurity, aiming to maximize resilience. An Atlanta suburb with a population of about 65,000, Marietta manages its own power, water and sewer systems. IT staff collaborate with Georgia Tech to strengthen the network linking the city’s critical infrastructure, which includes electrical substations and water and sewer pump stations.

“We’re always looking at better ways to advance and secure the utilities data on the operational network to improve the security of the electric and water grid,” Barrett said.

Barrett and his team have also started exploring how AI can enhance city services. For example, Marietta will soon move its contact center to the cloud, integrating chatbot functionality and AI-powered coaching tools for customer care staff. The city is tackling traffic congestion using sensors to detect train movements and provide notifications to residents, highlighting alternate routes. Barrett is also exploring robotic process automation to simplify purchasing and finance operations.

On the job since 2010, Barrett said he takes pride in his longevity in the role and the professional growth of his team, some of whom have gone on to become CIOs themselves. He credits Marietta’s success in IT to the strength and dedication of his team, as well as supportive leadership.

“I don’t know that I could do my job without having the leadership above me, who’ve allowed me to lead and helped Marietta become the city being recognized today.”
