Senate Bill 255, passed late last year, took effect on Monday, allowing drivers for the first time to use wireless electronic devices such as phones, laptops, and personal data assistants to prove to police officers, courts, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles that they’re covered.
“This was a common-sense step forward, which takes advantage of widely used technology and adds convenience for Ohioans,” said state Sen. Edna Brown (D., Toledo), the bill’s sponsor.
For those less technically savvy, that paper card remains an option.
“This is another great example of using technology to meet our customers’ needs where they are, not where we are,” said state BMV Registrar Don Petit.
