NEW YORK -- One of the largest school districts in Texas has launched an online professional development initiative.

NEW YORK -- One of the largest school districts in Texas has launched an online professional development initiative.

Dallas Independent School District, which has more than 10,500 teachers and more than 164,000 students, will use a combination of online video and interactive Web technology to improve teacher training.

This new online training approach will make a difference in the district's efforts to strengthen its professional development program, said Deputy Superintendent Hector Montenegro. We hope and expect that these programs will have a positive impact on teacher retention and will provide teachers with the tools they need to be successful. These programs also will assist in our efforts to raise student achievement.

The district is working with HyperTV Networks Inc. to develop the new services. It will use the company's software to provide video segments showing classroom best practices and to develop customized, interactive Web pages. The new technology also will allow the district to collect relevant and timely data from teachers who use the online materials.
