FEMA — Where's the Beef?

As an old Wendy's ad used to say ...

For you younger readers, here is the ad from years ago:

You can substitute "housing" for "beef."

The accolades for the wonderful disaster response in Texas and Florida are but distant memories. They are back there, three months, in the rearview mirror. Now the nitty-gritty of putting people back in homes becomes very real. In this case, I don't think FEMA will be offering to fly people to Puerto Rico as an option for not having housing in Texas.

Check out this Governing magazine article on the problems that emerging in Texas, What Temporary Housing? Harvey Victims Are Still Waiting.

I think Texas will be more of a problem for FEMA than Florida because of the sheer number of homes impacted and those without flood insurance.

What is coming next:

  • Hundreds of angry people at community meetings
  • Thousands of angry (really angry) emails to congress
  • Congressmen and -women sending letters to FEMA asking for explanations
  • GAO investigations as to how money is being spent
  • Congressional hearings
  • FEMA IG (in about three to five years) asking people to repay payments erroneously paid to them by FEMA
  • Repeat hundreds of angry emails to Congress
