Hawaii continues to reap the rewards of its digital investment. The Interactive Media Awards (IMA) recognized Hawaii’s online portal, eHawaii.gov, as the best website of its kind with a Best of Class award for the second year running. The recognition follows other national awards, including a 2014 Best of the Web recognition from the Center for Digital Government, Government Technology's sister organization.
Hawaii’s portal is cloud-based, open source, mobile-first and uses gamification elements like leaderboards and badges. Administrators said the portal is an emblem of the state’s efforts to transform itself into a service-oriented organization that can compete against any state in the nation.
Hawaii CIO Todd Nacapuy, who started in April, said the portal demonstrates that Hawaii is leading in a way that few states can keep up with.
“This latest recognition for Hawaii.gov demonstrates how the state of Hawaii can succeed when we combine innovation and responsiveness to the public’s needs,” Nacapuy said in a statement. “The eHawaii.gov team’s collaborative work with various departments across the state is an example of applying technology effectively to improve public access to government data and services and to promote transparency.”
