How many smart meters have been deployed in the United States?

Answer: 22 million

The number was included in a soon-to-be-published study study on electricity efficiency from economists Ahmad Faruqui and Doug Mitarotonda previewed in Smart Grid News.

The authors wrote that "there is an evolving consensus that the number [of smart meters] will rise threefold in the next five years."

The paper will estimate that electricity consumption will decline by 5 percent to 15 percent by 2020.
