What will be different about Google Fiber in Huntsville, Ala.?

Answer: it will operate the service over a network that the city is currently constructing and will own.

Rather than lay its own fiber, Google Fiber announced Feb. 22 that it will operate a gigabit broadband service over the network that's now being constructed by the city.

Huntsville Utilities will lease strands to Google Fiber, which will manage customers, while the city maintains ownership of its infrastructure.

“To date, we’ve built the majority of our Google Fiber networks from scratch,” a Google Fiber blog post reads. “But over the past five years, we’ve repeatedly seen that every city is unique. So in order to bring Fiber to more people, we’ve taken different approaches in different places.”
