$75 Million for State Bridges and Roads in Conn.

Will pay for nine bridge projects and design work for future-year projects.

Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that $75 million in state funding to pay for bridge and road upgrades is expected to gain approval when the state Bond Commission meets March 28.  The Governor has placed $45 million on the Bond Commission's agenda that will pay for nine bridge projects and design work for future-year projects.  In addition, Governor Rell has placed $30 million on the Bond Commission's agenda to pay for five major road projects.

"By releasing the bond funds at this time, we are continuing our unprecedented investments in the safety and integrity of Connecticut's transportation system and we are providing immediate benefits to our economy," Governor Rell said.  "These projects are shovel-ready, the design work is complete and these jobs are ready to go.  We will get the work started this construction season, boosting our local economy with $75 million worth of construction projects in communities throughout the state.

"We are fortunate in Connecticut that we are holding our own in this uncertain economy.  We must continue to do everything within our means to encourage economic growth and job creation.  A strong transportation system is critical to a strong economy. These are necessary, targeted investments and they will put millions of dollars into Connecticut's economy, creating construction jobs and new economic activity.  We must continue to take the right actions in order to be well-positioned when the national economy improves."
