Blacksburg, Va., Wins Award

Gracie award bestowed Dec. 14

On December 14, Congressman Rick Boucher presented the town of Blacksburg, Va., with the Grace Hopper Government Technology Leadership Award for Blacksburg Alert, the town's electronic public notification system.

The award was named in honor of Grace Hopper, a daring technology trailblazer and a 43-year Navy veteran that served as a computer specialist during World War II. Hopper is known for coining the term "bug" from an instance when a moth became lodged in a circuit causing a glitch in the first large-scale computer. Hopper also helped develop the COBOL programming language of the 1950s.
