Boston Mayor Appoints National Elections Expert

"The fact that voters had to wait in line to vote two weeks ago is incomprehensible and something I never want to see happen again"

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced that David King, Research Director of Harvard's Institute of Politics, has been named to review the city's Elections Department. Professor King will listen to recommendations from the Mayor's Voter Outreach and Education Task Force and develop a model elections system for the City of Boston.

"The fact that voters had to wait in line to vote two weeks ago is incomprehensible and something I never want to see happen again," Menino said. "David King is a highly regarded national elections expert and will work to develop a blueprint for excellence in elections procedure."

Professor King is the faculty director of Harvard's Program for Newly Elected Members of the U.S. Congress and lectures in Public Policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. After the 2000 presidential elections, he lead the Task Force on Election Administration for former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, which culminated in landmark voting rights legislation signed by President Bush in 2002. He is also the author of several books on political elections.

David King will be meeting with the Mayor's Voter Outreach and Education Task Force and will be seeking advice from local community leaders in his charge to develop his plan. Menino is excited to have such a national expert on board and welcomes his ideas and recommendations.
