CRM Application Helps Mason City, Ia., Meet OSHA Requirements

Software improves scheduling of employee safety training and reduces accidents by 50 percent

Mason City, Ia., is using CMSLive!, an integrated customer relationship management software from CrystalWare to reduce the amount of time it takes to remain compliant with federally mandated Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.

Based on the Progress OpenEdge(TM) platform, CMSLive! is a customizable application that allows municipalities to monitor employees, schedule speakers, reserve rooms, create template letters and schedule meetings. In addition to tracking the recurrent safety training schedules of its employees and assessing whether an individual requires specialized retraining, Mason City is also using the application to register attendees and notify their supervisors. Training records are shared with OSHA when required, as well as periodically distributed to employees to enhance confidence in their abilities and demonstrate the city's commitment to providing a safe work environment.

"Before implementing CMSLive! almost two years ago, it would take me a full day to track even one-tenth of the recurrent safety training schedules of the 600 employees in the city's police, fire and other municipal departments. With so many part-time people and transfers within different departments, it was an impossible task," says Barb Wood, safety director for Mason City, Iowa.

"Since we've implemented the system", Wood continued, "we can generate reports within minutes and email or print them for OSHA, supervisors and managers. We have reduced injuries this year alone by 50 percent by ensuring that no one slips through the cracks."
