"California's diverse population provides a unique set of opportunities that allows innovative technology solutions to address societal problems," said CTFC Vice President and Director of Programs Tim Wu.
"Our grantees work hard in eliminating technology barriers experienced by California's low-income, minority, immigrant, disabled, limited-English-speaking, rural and inner city communities," said CTFC President and CEO, Tessie Guillermo. "These organizations are using ICT to mobilize, facilitate and serve as historian for these populations."
Since its creation in 1998, CTFC has awarded over $28 million to organizations statewide.
2005 Grants awarded include:
- Tribal Digital Village, Valley Center ($50,000) to deploy a public service wireless network that utilizes innovative open source mesh networking equipment to provide broadband Internet access to residents on a rural San Diego Indian reservation.
- Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, Sacramento/statewide ($50,000) to strengthen the e-advocacy and community building functionality of LCHC's Web site which enables timely information dissemination and action alerts on health and policy-related issues for California Latino communities.
- Conscious Youth Media Crew, San Francisco ($50,000) to support a grassroots multimedia and moviemaking program that offers San Francisco youth state-of-the-art media training, media literacy, and workforce skills.
