The money will aid SmartRiverside, a city program to provide used computers to those who cannot afford a one, and training on how to use the technology. This effort is in conjunction with the city's plan to provide free wireless internet for Riverside by year's end.
Steve Reneker, the city's chief information officer, said the money will go exclusively to train residents in digital technology.
"This money will help double the number of local families who will be trained and equipped to make full use of Internet technology," Reneker said. "By the end of 2010, virtually every family who wants to participate in getting a computer and learning how to use it will be able to do so."
