Gov. Davis Pitches Technology Contract Reviews

The proposal would allow the Legislature to review software contracts.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Pressing to contain the Oracle scandal, Gov. Gray Davis is preparing to give state lawmakers a new right to evaluate future software deals worth more than $1.5 million before they are approved.

Tucked inside the revised budget Davis unveiled Tuesday is a proposal that would allow legislators to scour costly software contracts and require the state to evaluate the wisdom of each plan.

While some lawmakers looking into the Oracle controversy cheered the plan, others expressed concern that it could end up politicizing the process and giving the Legislature empty oversight.
