Gov. Perry Awards $818,535 in Grants

Expand Amber Alert Network, Clean up Meth Labs

Gov. Rick Perry today announced the award of $818,535 in grants to help the Texas Department of Public Safety expand the statewide Amber Alert Network and better equip officers to deal with methamphetamine lab seizures. These grants are awarded under the federal Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Program (LLEBG) and are distributed by the Governor's Criminal Justice Division (CJD).

"With these funds, law enforcement officials will be better able to protect children from violent predators and continue aggressive efforts to combat the methamphetamine plague," Perry said.

Through these grants, local law enforcement agencies are able to purchase necessary equipment and technology as well as provide increased training and education for new law enforcement personnel. In addition, task forces and crime prevention programs are established, security in and around schools is increased, drug courts receive support and aftercare services and treatment programs are provided to offenders through these grants.

Each year, CJD provides more that $130 million in grants to help Texans at the forefront of the fight against crime. CJD funds a variety of programs for juvenile justice, crime prevention and victim service grants-- all aimed at making Texas a safer place.

The award includes:
  • $629,204 to the Texas Department of Public Safety to provide safety equipment and technical assistance for hazardous chemical removal and disposal to officers across the state who come into contact with illegal methamphetamine laboratories.
  • $189,331 to the Texas Department of Public Safety to continue and expand the Texas Amber Alert Network, which provides 24-hour support to local law enforcement agencies that report and investigate child abduction cases and issues both regional and statewide public alerts for emergency child abduction cases.
