Governor's E-News is Launched

Kansas newsletter delivered to constituents and state employees.

In an effort to continue to communicate with Kansans and employees of the state, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' office launched the Governor's E-News. The E-News is an electronic newsletter sent to state employees and anyone who subscribes online to receive it.

Sebelius said, "So many times when I travel around the state talking to different communities and taking part in activities, I wish I could tell more people about it. We have great things happening around the state and this "E-News" will enable us to share some highlights that I am able to be a part of."

The newsletter contains a brief message from the governor and includes several photos of the news in the Governor's Office. For example, this week's newsletter highlights Sebelius' trip to the General Motors plant in Kansas City where the Kansas-built new Chevy Malibu car was unveiled. In her message, Sebelius said, "As Governor, I am committed to looking at how we serve the people of Kansas. As part of the Budget Efficiency Savings Team process, we have identified $60 million in savings so far. Our work, rooting out waste and inefficiencies and finding ways to work smarter will continue."

The Information Network of Kansas (INK) populated the first edition of the governor's newsletter in an HTML format with about 10,013 e-mail addresses composed of mostly state employees. A number of the newsletters were bounced back to INK due to firewalls in some systems. Those e-mails were then sent again in a text format, without pictures and only with the text. There will be a link between the governor's Web site and the newsletter. Visitors to the Web site will also be able to sign up for the newsletter.

This electronic newsletter is believed to be the first from Kansas state government. Governors of Hawaii and Washington also use electronic newsletters to communicate matters of the Governor's Office to the public.
