Iowa Faces Major Reorganization

Information technology department will be part of the consolidation

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Governor Tom Vilsack signed into law House File 534 completing the largest reorganization of state government in Iowa history.

The bill consolidates several state departments into the new Department of Administrative Services. The department will include the former departments of Personnel, General Services, Information Technology, and the Revenue and Finances Accounting Bureau.

Last year, the state reorganized the Department of Human Services, eliminating 43 regional offices and consolidating the Department of Transportation's maintenance garages.
"This reorganization will dramatically improve efficiency in state government and save millions of dollars over the next 10 years," Governor Vilsack said.

"This reorganization effort was a part of a joint effort of department directors, representatives from AFSCME and other unions and is a testament to their commitment to providing efficient and effective services at affordable costs."

Governor Vilsack and Lt. Governor Pederson intend to nominate Mollie Anderson, the current director of the Department of Personnel, to lead the new Department of Administrative Services.

"Mollie Anderson has the track record and vision to successfully manage the change," Vilsack said.
