Kentucky Region to Upgrade 9-1-1 Services

Funding will broaden coverage of E9-1-1

Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher recently presented a $455,058 homeland security check to the city of West Liberty to purchase equipment that will upgrade the region's 9-1-1 system. The counties included in the 9-1-1 service area include Morgan, Magoffin and Wolfe Counties.

"When an emergency occurs, 9-1-1 service is the link between first responders and the communities they serve," said Gov. Ernie Fletcher. "That is why it is critically important that we ensure every Kentuckian has access to the 9-1-1 services they need. This grant will work to ensure that this community and the surrounding counties will have the upgraded 9-1-1 service that will enable them to be ready and prepared for emergencies."

This funding will be used specifically to upgrade the region's E9-1-1 capabilities. E9-1-1 is an enhanced emergency technology that allows the dispatcher to immediately identify the telephone number and location of a cell phone caller. Such an enhancement is vital in emergencies in which the caller can't talk or is panicking and can't get the necessary information to the dispatcher.

"The counties benefiting from this grant are largely rural, which means response times are greater," said Rep. John Will Stacy. "Having an upgraded communications system to provide quicker response in these areas is crucial."

The current E9-1-1 service in this area is prone to downtime and Magoffin and Wolfe currently have no E9-1-1 service. The upgrades to the system in the City of West Liberty will eliminate the downtime problems and will provide coverage to Magoffin and Wolfe Counties.

The city of West Liberty is responsible for the management of the grant.
