Kentucky's Bill Watch Allows Citizens to Track Legislation Online

Tracking legislation as it moves through the 2004 Kentucky General Assembly

Kentuckians now have greater access to the inner workings of government, thanks to a new service called Bill Watch.

Bill Watch is an online tool that allows citizens to view and track Kentucky legislation as it makes its way through the 2004 Kentucky General Assembly. Citizens can either register for the free version of Bill Watch or subscribe to an expanded version that allows users to track an unlimited number of bills and receive e-mail notifications for changes in a bill's status.

Those accessing Bill Watch can search for legislation based on criteria such as keywords, topics, committees or sponsors. Bill Watch provides fast access to the bill's history, current status, a summary, amendments and the full text of the legislation.

"Connecting citizens to government is one of our top priorities," said Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher. "This new service is a step in that direction because it allows greater access to information on legislation that has the ability to affect all Kentuckians. Ensuring Kentucky state government is up to speed with technology must be a priority as we compete with surrounding states and establish the most efficient and effective government possible."

"I believe in making government more accessible to Kentuckians, and this is one more way to do that," said Senate President David L. Williams.

House Speaker Jody Richards added that he has "made it a priority in this year's legislative session to make state government more accessible. Not only does Bill Watch serve as a useful tool for interested citizens, but it should also become an important classroom resource for Kentucky students," said Richards.

Bill Watch is the result of a partnership between the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission and Kentucky.gov, the state's official Web site.
