Missouri Fire Departments Benefit From Federal Surplus Program

Surplus radiological and personal protective equipment to enhance their homeland security preparedness capabilities.

Department of Public Safety Director Mark James announced eight first responder organizations will receive free radiological equipment from Homeland Defense Equipment Reuse (HDER) Program.

"I am pleased local fire departments are taking advantage of surplus radiological and personal protective equipment to enhance their homeland security preparedness capabilities," James said.

The program provides surplus radiological detection instruments, personal protection, and other first responder equipment, as well as training and long-term technical support to first responder agencies applying for the grant.

Dec. 1, 2006 is the last date to order equipment for this quarter. The next request date for new equipment is Jan. 2, 2007. The approved equipment will be shipped to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for redistribution to the departments.

Organizations receiving equipment are: Bismarck Fire Department, Oran Fire Department, Purdy Fire Department, Hazelgreen Volunteer Fire Protection Department near Richland, West Plains Fire Department, Bolivar Fire Department, Battlefield Volunteer Fire Department near Lebanon, and SEMA.
