Montgomery County, Md., Implements New Criminal Justice Information Sharing System

Web-based system integrates public safety systems

Through a $3.1 million contract with BearingPoint Inc., Montgomery County is implementing an integrated criminal justice information system.

The Integrated Justice Information System (IJIS) is a Web-based system that will enable the county to integrate disparate public safety systems. The system will enable Montgomery County's public safety and criminal justice agencies, including police, parole officers, courts, and public health organizations, to share information vital in making key decisions on a day-to-day basis.

IJIS will replace the county's Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS), a mainframe system that was designed, implemented and in operation since the mid-1980s. Under the current configuration, the county's law enforcement, courts and other agencies operate on separate systems that are not designed to communicate with each other and therefore do not allow information to be easily shared.

The contract, which covers the first of four project phases, began April 1 and continues through May 2005.
