New Orleans Selects Enterprise E-Government Solution

City's Department of Safety equips inspectors with wireless technology

NEW ORLEANS, LA. -- The New Orleans Department of Safety and selected a Web-based software solution to be implemented as an enterprise application. The new system provides a centralized approach to resource, land and permit management.

The application provides the city with a centralized database, giving employees the ability to share data and information easily and have access to current information about licenses and permits.

The system will also provide inspection teams with technology to shift many daily tasks from the office to the field. With the wireless solution, inspectors will be able to enter inspection results from the field, updating the database in real-time.

New Orleans will also be expanding its online services to citizens and business by implementing a public access portal. The portal will increase access to the city's building and planning management activities by allowing citizens and businesses to apply for permits, apply for or renew a variety of licenses, pay fees, or submit comments directly from the Internet, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"The goal for New Orleans was to find a Web-based solution that would provide the department with the necessary tools to efficiently connect all department employees and simplify their daily activities," remarked Greg Meffert, CTO for the city. "We were also looking for a demonstrable e- government portal technology to enhance self-service for our citizens. By providing on-line access to our constituents, we will save both time and money for the city and the public."
