New Web site Details Delaware's Water Supply Picture

Governor wants state residents to understand the water supply and drought issues

DOVER, Del. -- The status of northern Delaware's water supply, details of the historic 2002 drought, and Gov. Ruth Minner's proposals to avoid future supply shortages and severe water-use restrictions are now available on the state's Web site.

The new interactive site includes an online form for ordering a full-color poster and brochure, "2020 on Tap: Ensuring Delaware's Fresh Water Supply." The site also describes successful efforts to create more than 1 billion gallons of new storage since the 1999 drought, details proposed short-term projects such as raising the level of Hoopes Reservoir and describes potential future projects such as a possible reservoir at Bread and Cheese Island near Churchmans Marsh.

The governor's water supply agenda is also outlined on the site. That agenda includes the comprehensive Delaware Water Supply Self-Sufficiency Act (House Bill 118).

"Water supply is a complicated subject, but it's important that the people of Delaware understand where their water comes from and the significant efforts to increase supply," Gov. Minner said. "Our awareness campaign communicates the issues surrounding water supply and drought in everyday language."
