The Civil Division is responsible for enforcing civilian obligations, performing such duties as serving legal papers, enforcing court orders, and collection of debts. About half of the unit's staff consists of deputies, who are responsible for accurately collecting related data.
While in the field and using the Dolphin 7900s, deputies scan the barcode on the individual's file, which then automatically populates the software's interface with the necessary information about the specific case. Deputies are able to confirm the accuracy of the individual's information and collect the information necessary for the case.
Prior to implementing the mobile technology, the deputies used a paper-based process, which was time consuming and prone to inaccuracies. Deputies also manually inputted data at the end of their shifts, costing taxpayers precious labor hours.
Since the mobile technology roll out began, deputies have reduced data transfer time down by 45 minutes per day, consequently maximizing the amount of time deputies are available for fieldwork. During the batch transfer process from the Dolphin 7900 to the agency's centralized data center, deputies are also ensured that no duplicate data has been entered.
"When searching for a mobile solution for our deputies, we ruled out the use of car-mounted laptops because of durability concerns," said Sgt. Robert Burns of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. "We chose the Dolphin 7900s for the mobile computers' reliability, ruggedness, and convenience."
