The "Safe Net" proposal would create a full-time Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit under the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Authored by Sen. Jim Wilson, (D-Tahlequah), Senate Bill 1479 seeks to crack down on the growing problem of child predators combing the Internet. In addition to the ICAC provision, the bill toughens penalties against predators who solicit minors online.
"One in every five children who use the Internet is approached by an online sexual predator," Henry said. "The 'Safe Net' initiative will take action against these pedophiles and make the Internet safer for our young people to use."
Senate Bill 1713 focuses on toughening laws against the importation of methamphetamine. Authored by Sen. Charles Wyrick (D-Fairland), the bill sets a minimum prison sentence of 10 years to life for meth traffickers who import more than one pound of the drug.
"Thanks to the landmark anti-meth law we passed in 2004, Oklahoma virtually eliminated dangerous meth labs in our communities, but meth dealers continue to fuel this deadly scourge by importing the drug," Henry said. "SB 1713 is a vital part of our 'Mission MethNet' initiative, which will also put more undercover drug agents on the street and bolster meth treatment and education programs."
