Pa. Geographic Information Systems Day

Booth exhibits, a map contest, and real-world geospatial technology applications

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is once again celebrating International Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day on Wednesday, November 15. Pennsylvania's GIS Day activities promote Geospatial Technologies (GT) literacy in government, schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on education and awareness.

The theme for Pennsylvania GIS Day 2006 is "GIS: More than Maps!" Geospatial technologies are used in 31 Commonwealth agencies today and in the majority of Pennsylvania's counties. For many years, GIS was used primarily for asset management and emergency management. Today, in addition to supporting infrastructure analysis and public safety, GT/GIS and electronic mapping are used by many government business and service areas, and facilitate economic development, safe schools, crime mapping, homeland security, improvements in the delivery of health and human services, conservation and environmental management, land and facilities management, and government operational efficiencies.

This year's GIS Day events, put on by the PA Geospatial Technologies Office (GTO), will consist of booth exhibits, a map contest, and participants will be showcasing real-world geospatial technology applications and demonstrating how GT/GIS is transforming information management, analysis, and reporting for government agencies and other Commonwealth geospatial stakeholders.
