Parks and Recreation Introduces E-Newsletter

A cost-effective way to reach new audiences, particularly adults in their 20s who are avid computer users and highly connected

The Department of Natural Resources in Michigan unveiled its first issue of an e-newsletter designed to promote the natural, cultural and historical resources in Michigan's state parks, recreation areas, harbors and boating access sites.

"Inside Michigan's Great Outdoors" is offered free to individuals who have made a reservation in a state park or harbor and provided an e-mail address. Anyone may sign up to receive the publication free by e-mail at the DNR Web site:http://michigan.gov/dnrinsidenews.

"This opens a direct two-way communications channel with our visitors to convey vital information about the many recreation opportunities available in the state park and recreation system," said Ron Olson, chief of the parks and recreation division. "It opens a return channel so that our visitors may share their experiences enjoying outdoor recreation."

The first issue contains stories about short trips to state parks and recreation areas within one tank of gas from major population centers and the Kellogg Foundation's $3 million grant to the DNR to create universally accessible state parks and recreation areas. Additional links highlight cabins, lodges and boating access sites and invite recipients to share their favorite locations for recreation.

Future issues will be published quarterly and will include profiles of recreation enthusiasts and other emerging recreation trends. The publication also will be available on the DNR Web site.
"This is a very cost-effective way to reach new audiences, particularly adults in their 20s who are avid computer users and highly connected," said Colleen Steinman, public relations and marketing coordinator for the parks and recreation division.
