Residents of Waltham, Mass., Can Now Pay Municipal Bills Online

"Constituents are very excited about having an electronic option for making payments"

The city of Waltham has set up a new online payment center using a solution from Govern Software that provides citizens with secure 24/7 access to pay real estate and water bills on the city's Web site. Like using an automatic teller at the bank, taxpayers can view their updated balances right away and, if they make a call to city hall, the clerk also sees the new balance. There is no need to wait until the next business day for a database to be adjusted.

"Our goal is to develop modern, responsive services built around the needs of our taxpayers" says Waltham's Treasurer and Collector, Thomas Magno. The Treasurer/Collector's office rolled out the online payment system as part of its e-City initiative. "Our new government Web site, designed to provide information and payment options, around-the-clock, is user-friendly and convenient. It is the most recent step in our mission of bringing city government to the people," Magno says, "With Govern Software's Govern.WEB and now ePayments, we are truly open for business 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

The city of Waltham launched its electronic payment system in June 2005 and collected $21 million in online credit card and electronic check payments. In total the system handles some 17,000 property tax accounts.

Taxpayers' satisfaction with online government services is high. "Constituents are very excited about having an electronic option for making payments" says Magno. "In today's society this has become a popular and more convenient means of making purchases and paying bills. The program has been well received by our citizens and is operating smoothly. We could not be happier with the results."

By reducing the number of steps and the number of paper documents involved, Govern Software's solution streamlines and simplifies the payment process. It also provides a fast and effective method of tracking payments, facilitating data analysis and is a cost-effective way to serve the needs of taxpayers and property owners.
