Saint Paul's Public Library Plans to go Wireless

Twelve locations will have wireless capabilities by end of 2007

The Saint Paul Public Library, in Minnesota, will initiate a plan to add wireless computer access in all library locations. Mayor Chris Coleman says he is committed to bringing the Minnesota library system into the 21st century, and as a result, he is proposing a special budget initiative to bring enhanced wireless services to give residents new access to technologies.

Since more and more databases and information are being offered via the web, it is important that the library make this information available to as many people as possible while keeping costs down. A cost effective way to add more access to library resources is to add wireless access at library locations, which will allow those who have their own computers to use the library more effectively. When space and stationary PCs are limited, wireless will also allow the library to add more access to by offering laptops for use in library locations for those who do not own a portable computer.

The goal is, it that by the end of 2007, nine of the library's twelve locations will be wireless and that new programs, including much needed computer instruction, will be offered regularly at all library locations.
