Sessions Introduces Bill in Congress to Prohibit Municipal Telecom Services

"Except to remedy market failures by private enterprise to provide such services"

Texas Congressman Pete Sessions -- who worked for SouthWestern Bell Telephone until he entered politics -- introduced HR 2726 "to prohibit municipal governments from offering telecommunications, information, or cable services except to remedy market failures by private enterprise to provide such services."

Some municipalities -- most notably Philadelphia -- attracted opposition to their municipal wi-fi plans, and now Pennsylvania and Florida law prohibits cities in those states from competing with private-sector companies.
