Social Security Administration Computer Error May Result in Incorrect Social Security Benefit Statements

"It is important that Missourians use the corrected SSA Benefit statement to file their 2007 taxes to avoid any delay in processing their return."

The Missouri Department of Revenue (Department) Friday announced that it is ready to process any amended returns which may be needed due to a programming error at the Social Security Administration (SSA). This computer error in Washington resulted in many Missouri taxpayers possibly receiving incorrect Social Security benefit statements, according to a release from the Governor's Office.

"I commend our Department of Revenue on their quick response and proactive steps to clean up another mess in Washington," Gov. Matt Blunt said. "I know that some Missourians will be inconvenienced by Washington's mistake but our state's Revenue Department will continue to be aggressive in fixing this error to ensure that Missouri taxpayers are refunded their hard-earned dollars."

"The Department of Revenue has acted quickly to respond to the Social Security Administration error and ensure Missouri taxpayers may quickly receive their refunds," said Omar Davis, department director. "It is important that Missourians use the corrected SSA Benefit statement to file their 2007 taxes to avoid any delay in processing their return. While this was not an error we caused, we are proactively working to address and correct any inconvenience to our customers."

The Department has added a helpful link on the Web site to further assist Missouri taxpayers through the process of either filing the proper Form SSA-1099, or with the process in filing an amended return. The link to the Web site provides Missouri taxpayers with instructions and answers to frequently asked questions.

Every year the SSA mails Form SSA-1099 to beneficiaries who received payment from the agency during the previous calendar year. Due to a programming error at the SSA, Form SSA-1099 containing incorrect information was mailed to many Missourians. The SSA quickly fixed the problem and mailed the corrected SSA-1099s on January 25, 2008.

If Missouri taxpayers have not filed their Missouri income tax or Property Tax Credit (PTC) claim, please use the corrected Form SSA-1099 to prepare the income tax return or the PTC claim. If the taxpayer has already filed, use the corrected Form SSA-1099 to file an amended income tax return or PTC claim.

Missouri does not have a special form for amending a tax return; so Form MO-1040 Individual Income Tax -- Long Form, should be completed with the corrected figures. The long form should be used even if the original return or claim was filed electronically, or a short form was used. To avoid delays in processing the amended Missouri return, include a copy of the amended federal income tax return and any supporting documents, including Form MO-A (Individual Income Tax Adjustments), if applicable.

Missouri does not have a special form for filing an amended PTC claim. Form MO-PTC  should be completed with the corrected figures.

If Missouri taxpayers have additional questions, please go to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the Department's Web site at or by calling the Department at (573) 751-3505. To date over 275,000 Missourians have already filed their Missouri Income Tax return.
