NASCIO represents state CIOs and has feted states work on technology projects for 14 years, and the awards are given annually to state IT programs and systems that have created proven cost-effective, innovative solutions in the operation of state government.
This year, the program received a record number of entries -- 17 nominations from 30 states. Winners were selected in nine categories and two additional projects received special recognition awards.
"Now, more than ever before, it is important to recognize state IT projects that exemplify best practices," said NASCIO President and CIO of Kentucky Aldona Valicenti. "This year our winners truly represent the best of the best. Our congratulations go out to the winners."
NASCIOs Awards committee, comprised of state and corporate members, chose the award winners. Kay Argo, CIO of Alabama, chaired the committee.
Criteria for selection included a description of the project; length of time in operation; relative significance to the operation of government; benefits realized by service recipients, taxpayers, agencies and the state; and return on investment. Full submissions from all nominations are posted on NASCIOs Web site.
