Suppression of Free Speech on WSIS Agenda

Tunisian jailed for 1.5 years for making fun of President Ben Ali

As the World Summit on the Information Society prepares for its international conference in Tunisia this winter, Reporters Without Borders is ensuring that worldwide repression of free speech is on the agenda. Zouhair Yahyaoui, for example, is a Tunisian who was imprisoned for 1.5 years after he made fun of Tunisian President Ben Ali on his Web site Tunezine.com.

Reporters Without Borders is also taking to task the Maldives, China, Iran, Cuba and other countries that suppress or censor the Internet or jail those expressing opinions of which the government does not approve.
