Twitter Hiring Liaison to Engage Government Users

The job could signal that Twitter recognizes the potential of public-sector users.

The microblogging site Twitter is hoping to better engage government professionals by hiring its first government liaison.

Categorized under its jobs link as a "public policy" position, Twitter states it's "looking for an experienced, entrepreneurial person to make Twitter better for policymakers, political organizations, and government officials and agencies."

The salary range isn't listed, but the position will be based out of Washington, D.C., making it Twitter's first D.C.-based employee. This makes sense for the San Francisco-based company, as the person will be the closest point of contact with people and organizations looking to better use Twitter's services.

"You'll help Twitter understand what we can do to better serve candidates and policymakers across party and geographical lines," the job posting states. "You'll support policymakers' use of Twitter to help them communicate and interact with their constituents around the world."

The liaison will be expected to work with nearly every group at the company to give perspective on how Twitter ought to be, the posting states. As well, he or she will help set the culture and approach of a "fledging public policy department and be an important part of our very small company."

The qualifications include at least three years experience working in government or with politicians, diplomatic instincts and great relationship skills, strong organizational skills, strong written and communication skills, a willingness to travel, direct entrepreneurial or other trail-blazing experience, being fluent in technology, having a passion for information sharing, and knowledge of government and politics that extends beyond the Beltway and the United States.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide excellent support of government and political use of Twitter.
  • Advocate for government and political users within Twitter.
  • Increase political use of Twitter.
  • Develop best practices and other educational material.
  • Do outreach to better understand government needs.
