Virginia Honored as Leader in Health Information Technology

Secretary Chopra awarded HIMSS State Advocacy Award.

Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced Tuesday that Virginia Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra has been awarded the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's (HIMSS) 2007 State Leadership Advocacy Award. He was honored at a reception in Washington, D.C. as part of HIMSS Advocacy Day.

"HIMSS's recognition of Aneesh's leadership in Health IT is well deserved and serves as further validation of the tremendous progress we're making towards an improved health care system in Virginia," Kaine said. "Secretary Chopra, Health and Human Resources Secretary Marilyn Tavenner, our Health Reform Commission and Health IT Council form a powerful team for advancing Health IT in Virginia."

"I'm very honored to receive this award on behalf of the Governor and our entire Health IT team in Virginia," Chopra said. "As part of the Governor's overall health strategy, and in partnership with Secretary Tavenner, we're making real strides that will improve healthcare for all Virginians in the years to come."

Also honored at the event was U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt, U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, Colorado State Senator Bob Hagedorn, and the state of Michigan.

HIMSS is a leading healthcare membership organization focused on providing leadership for the use of healthcare information technology (IT) and management systems. Founded in 1961, HIMSS represents more than 20,000 individual members and over 300 corporate members.
