Votewatch Puts Eye on Election Process

Will collect data and report problems

Votewatch, a citizen-based nonpartisan group, is focused on monitoring this year's presidential elections. Votewatch's online service allows voters to immediately report voting-machine errors, polling-place problems and other voting obstacles.

This past week a new report, released by the Election Reform Information Project, stated that the election systems in many states will still be susceptible to the same flaws that caused the 2000 stalemate in Florida. For the 2004 general election, the group is arming volunteer election monitors with data gathering tools, employing scientific analysis, and tapping the finest statisticians in the country. The effort is geared to collect data on voter experiences at diverse polling locations and to continue to prepare for the presidential election in November.

"We learned in California during the recall that an election can be monitored with a relatively small coalition of observers," said Votewatch founder Steven Hertzberg.
