Wisconsin Governor Unveils Web site Featuring State-Owned Lands

New Internet mapping program will help residents locate properties open to the public for fishing, hiking, biking, bird-watching and other outdoor activities

Speaking at the Wisconsin Bear Hunters Association's Annual Convention in Stevens Point last weekend, Gov. Jim Doyle unveiled a new Internet mapping program that will help residents locate all general Department of Natural Resources (DNR) properties open to the public for fishing, hiking, biking, bird-watching and a host of other outdoor activities.

"Through our Knowles-Nelson Stewardship program, we are protecting our pristine ecological lands for Wisconsin families to explore and enjoy," Doyle said. "This new computer tool will help us all better locate, use and enjoy our public lands. Users can search for state properties they know by name, or they can look for public lands in a town, county or region they want to discover."

Users can select traditional maps showing symbols for roads, highways, bodies of water and forestlands, as well as choose aerial photographs and contour maps to get a better sense of vegetation, habitat and topography of a DNR-managed property. Maps of wildlife areas, public fishing grounds, natural areas, trails, state parks, forestlands, campgrounds, waterways and all state lands purchased with stewardship funds are all available online. The site allows users to create maps for their personal use and save them as PDF files to share with friends and family via e-mail.

Visitors to the DNR's site can also plan trips and gather information about recommended fishing spots, nearby public campgrounds, special events, or even buy recreational licenses online.
