Alabama Debuts iPhone App for Government Info

Alabama has become the newest state to offer a free iPhone app that allows users to access information located on the state Web portal.

Released Friday, March 5, for the Apple iPhone and the Google Android mobile operating system, the app was developed by e-government services provider NIC, which has previously released similar apps for some of its other partnering states, like Utah, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Users may download press releases; search for Web sites, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and street addresses of Alabama government agencies; and use iPhone's and Android's mapping capabilities.

"Over time, our goal is to broaden the mobile experience for all users across all the major phone operating systems," the state announced on

NIC designs and manages more than 20 states' portals. The company develops e-government services for 3,900 government agencies at the local, state and federal levels. NIC has developed 11 government-related iPhone apps in the past six months.
