Better Criminal Justice in Virginia

Grants enable localities and state agencies to support needs of new and continuing criminal justice programs

Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced that more than $2.5 million in grants have been awarded to support programs to improve criminal justice throughout the Commonwealth.

"These grants will enable localities and state agencies to support new and continuing programs addressing a wide range of criminal justice needs and issues," Governor Kaine said. "This demonstrates a commitment to continue making improvements to ensure that our criminal justice system is effective and responsive."

The money for the grants comes from federal funds allocated to Virginia and state funds appropriated by the General Assembly. The Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) administers the grant programs. DCJS' Criminal Justice Services Board (CJSB) reviewed and approved the grant awards.

"These grants will specifically fund criminal justice system improvements; homeland security efforts involving communications and disaster plans; juvenile justice and delinquency prevention programs; and school resource officers," DCJS Director Leonard G. Cooke said.

In total, 23 grants were approved and awarded to four state agencies and 15 localities. For more information regarding grant opportunities with DCJS, go to www.dcjs.virginia.gov/grants.
