FDNY to Offer Distance Learning Degree Program in Homeland Readiness and Emergency Management

"The fact that the courses are all available online further meets the need of emergency responders whose tours extend beyond that of a traditional student"

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) is teaming with Sonoma College Inc. of Petaluma Calif., to provide its over 15,000 members (and the New York EMS Authority) with a degree program in Homeland Readiness and Emergency Management (HREM) that is instructor-led via the Internet.

As part of the agreement, Sonoma will provide FDNY's members the opportunity to achieve advanced standing in Sonoma's HREM Program by awarding transfer credit from Sonoma for their already- completed NYC Fire Academy training and for Fire Department courses that are recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE) Guide. As part of the agreement, said Sonoma in a release, the FDNY will also endorse the HREM Degree Program to its current and retired employees. Additionally, FDNY and Sonoma College developed content and curriculum specific to the HREM Program.

Dr. Victor Herbert, FDNY Dean of Instruction said, "Sonoma College is one of a few colleges willing to recognize the quality of the FDNY training from probationary school and beyond, offering direct credit for courses taken in the academies. In addition, Sonoma offers deep advanced standing for outside college work, ACE/PONSI, CLEP/DANTES and other educational experiences. Each individual will bring more or less credit potential with them, but Sonoma has made it clear that they intend to maximize the opportunity in their Homeland Readiness and Emergency Management degree programs. The fact that the courses are all available online further meets the need of emergency responders whose tours extend beyond that of a traditional student. This may be just what many FDNY personnel have been waiting for to advance their education."
