Florida Department of Management Services Recognized for Procurement Initiatives

MyFloridaMarketPlace, training for purchasing staff, all part of 'forward-thinking approaches for the procurement profession'

Monday, the State of Florida received accolades for two procurement programs undertaken during Governor Bush's tenure. At the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP) 59th Annual Forum, Florida has been recognized as one the nation's "leading public agencies that have developed cutting-edge, non-standard, forward-thinking approaches for the procurement profession."

"Governor Bush has made a firm commitment to bringing innovative solutions to long standing problems in state government and these efforts have not gone unnoticed," said Secretary William S. Simon.

eProcurement is widely accepted as the business-purchasing model for the future and has many benefits when applied to the public sector. MyFloridaMarketPlace, the state's Web-based procurement system, helps the state of Florida better direct, coordinate, evaluate and resource its procurement process. By aggregating spending on products and services, Florida, through MyFloridaMarketPlace, will be better positioned to negotiate contracts with suppliers based on economies of scale. As a result, buyers will benefit from increased competition among the state's vendors, and vendors will benefit by reaching a greater purchasing audience.

In addition, the Department of Management Services in conjunction with NIGP created a Training and Certification Program for Public Purchasing Personnel, which provides training to those who expend public funds to meet the strict ethical and economic guidelines set out by the governor.
